Papers, 1854-1893.

Papers, 1854-1893, include a certificate of appointment and a record book. The record book was originally an account book for an unidentified type of business, perhaps plumbing, and includes accounts, 1854-1855, with name, date, and amount paid or owed. The first page has accounts of plumbing fixtures and work done by Charles Quigley, April 21, 1884. There is another account for plumbing work done at various addresses, March 25-April 11, 1893. John Quigley's war stories are interspersed on 17 pages between pp. 25-93, recording events of Sept. 11, 1862-July 25, 1865. His stories detail the formation of the 27th Michigan Infantry (p. 51), its trip to the Southern front, skirmishes with Morgan's men, the battle of Jackson, Miss., Spottsylvania, Va., and other battles and troop movements. A number of pages in the volume are missing. The certificate documents the appointment of Quigley as Captain in the 27th Michigan Infantry by Gov. Henry H. Crapo on Jan. 23, 1865. The certificate is quite brittle and acidic and includes an orange colored stamp.
